— Description

The Thermal Shield, commonly referred to as Heat Shield by the Scorch, is a Titan Defensive Ability that appears in Titanfall 2.[1] It is used by the Scorch-class Titan. A similar shield, used for offensive purposes, is used by the Thermal Scorch in Titanfall: Assault.

When used, Scorch will use his hand to create a shield out of fire, similar to the Vortex Shield. It will stop incoming fire, and will damage enemies that get too close. It does a lot of damage, killing Pilots almost instantly, and does a extremely high damage against enemy Titans.

Thermal Shield has a 0.3 second deploy time, requires a minimum of 20% charge to use, and has a cooldown of 1 second after being put away.

Despite looking similar in appearance, Thermal Shield is fundamentally different from Vortex Shield:

  • While Vortex Shield catches projectiles to throw back at enemies, Thermal Shield simply destroys them.
  • Thermal shield has a significantly higher raise and lower time, making reactively catching projectiles much harder.
  • Thermal Shield deals extremely high damage to enemies touching it.
  • Vortex Shield is tied to Ion's energy reserves, while Thermal Shield is on its own timer.
  • Despite how it visually looks the same as Vortex shield from first person, Thermal shield will not cover Scorch's entire hitbox, and so enemy titans and pilots can still hit the edge of Scorch while he uses his shield. Because of this, if a Scorch wants to block an Arc Wave with their shield, they usually need to be crouched, unlike Ion.

Strategies

  • Trap an enemy into a corner with Thermal Shield, then deploy Incendiary Traps (this can be done while still using Thermal Shield) and light it on fire, dealing massive damage and probably destroying the titan.
  • Use it to kill pilots that have grapple'd onto you.
  • Activating the shield can be used to skip the final portion of the T-203 Thermite Launcher's reload.
  • When a pilot is rodeoing you, back up against a wall, look straight up and turn on your thermal shield after a couple of seconds. When the pilot is forced off you, they should land in your heat shield, killing them almost instantly.
  • Bad Ronin players will attempt to melee most enemy Titans, allowing a Scorch player to absolutely decimate them with Thermal Shield. Thermal Shield also makes Sword Core significantly more risky due to Ronin's low health.

Trivia

  • There is a visual glitch where Scorch will have his hand out, but there will be no flames.
  • When damaging a titan, there will be a screeching sound that is like metal melting.
  • Despite the ability's name being Thermal Shield, Scorch never addresses it as such, instead using the term 'Heat Shield'.
